Imagine the job interview:

Are you American -

Shiny Teeth, Slicked Back Hair, Cheesy Grin and Know Lots About Sports Played in the USA -

Do You Know Lots About Brighton & Monaco FC -

Can You Make Every Possible Incorrect Decision -

Do You Lack Accountability -

You’ll fit in fine here, have a 8 year contract.

On a serious note, hope your employment situation resolves itself. There’s a dearth of good people out there, even if the worst happens there’s a better job waiting.

Thanks mate. It was always the risk of going into a start up as I did. We’ll see where we are at the end of the financial year.

OK... some musing after a day of debate on here and waffle in the media and social platforms.

Given that anyone prepared and interested enough to come on our Forum has awareness of the game and a depth of knowledge of the game..(not just confined to Chelsea faithful) I hazard a guess that two somewhat whimsical thoughts following from me may gain some response..I hope so....

Some of our members are far better at expressing an analysis of games and players,,again I believe everyone here can read such deep analysis and make their own agreement or disagreement with pithy responses or less expansive breakdowns but with and understanding of the points being made.

So....my offerings..first,,,,take ANY two members of here...give them a sh*t load of money, a comfortable office and endless access to every aspect of the game and I'm convinced they would come up with a far better balanced squad than we see today,,,and I'm saying that about any two regardless of outlook and possibly differing football philosophies'.

Second ,,,pick ANY two on here with roughly compatible football philosophies and they would come up with possibly at least a 10% "smoother" squad,,not necessarily better just more in tune with each others views,,,,

Just whimsy...anyone care to comment?

I think that there are roles that we the ‘unwashed’ could readily fill. For instance:  Scout, in the words of Yosser Hughes “Gissa Job, I can do that “

Same with identifying potential signings.

But elite level sport is so fine-tuned now that it’s become specialised and elite level knowledge is required. That’s not to say we couldn’t become those people in time. I also think that having been attendees at the University Of Life counts for a great deal and some of the ‘elites’ do lack that having lived most of theirs in the professional bubbles they exist in.

From experience and I hope you don’t mind me saying, cover your bases. It’s not dis-loyal, it’s practical.

Do you know who I think would be really good in this role, but I can never see them taking the job… Frank Lampard. I do think he has an eye for talent and he is clearly a smart guy with a very good understanding of the game. He also has the connection with the club and would have the respect of almost anyone in the game.

Agreed,  ironically Petr Cech would probably also be very good in that role

Do you have inside information that Jesse Marsch is lined up to take over 😀

Sadly, you’re probably not far wrong. I actually don’t think our squad is too far away from being competitive, under the right manager and with the medical side of things in the club being fixed.

I put a post in the squad status topic outlining what I’d do this summer and it’s mainly bringing in about 5 new players, who have experience and are proven in their position.

I might be out of a job soon, so maybe I’ll apply for a role at the club!

I think we are a million miles away to be honest. I absolutely agree a better coach than Poch would change things but I'm not sure by how much. I don't believe we are far off where this squad's ceiling is in the table (8th-9th). Wolves turned up to the Bridge with Cunha and Neto, better forwards than anything we have to offer. That's the reality of the situation.

It is a badly constructed squad and there are weaknesses all over. There isn't a single area of strength, which is damming considering the outlay. Heads should be rolling right now but people haven't lost their jobs and look to be in no danger.  You can only assume the ownership is happy with the job being done by Stewart and Winstanley.

IMO Emanelo is the perfect fit for a DoF position. Let not forget he survives all those years under RA, work harmoniously with most of the coaches with a bit of discord, and certainly has the knowledge of setting up a scouting dept.

Also you don't get a top job with the PIF, if you are a numpty like the dynamic duo currently residing under the disguise as sporting directors.

What constitutes as a "proven" Director of Football?

Not sure who'd we even consider, much less hire, to take up such a role. As you can see it's a pretty wide canvas of candidates that hold similar positions at other clubs with many hardly being renown. I don't see it as one of those situations where hiring a named candidate magically makes amends.

Outside of the obvious names… Dan Ashworth, Paul Mitchell, Michael Edwards, Monchi and Michael Zorc etc I don’t know.  But you’d have to assume that with their contacts in sport generally and even utilising the likes of Neil Bath or some agents,  they should be able to create a strong pipeline of candidates.

In terms of what constitutes ‘proven’ maybe this was the wrong word, but I think strong leadership and visionary qualities.  We’ve clearly got plenty of scouts who can spot a talented 20 year old,  we need someone to mould that into a football strategy, taking into account the academy.

Take this summer for example, we are crying out for a striker and maybe you could argue an upgrade in 1 or 2 positions.  Maybe Left back could be upgraded and maybe centre back depending on Fofana and Badiashille fitness and form.  Outside of that we should keep our powder dry, but you can bet your bottom dollar we will be in the market for another central midfielder or left footed RW, or 19 year old striker etc.

The return of Micheal Emenalo who will set the scouting department up not only to scout u20"s as you elided to in your piece, but also players in there mid 20"s who will have an automatic impact on the squad and are an upgrade on the existing rather than the current philosophy of a cheap gamble.

Once upon a time the club used to shop at harrods, now its the local corner shop selling Aldi products at harrods prices

Its a funny old game

Marshe achieved something, keeping Yorkshire Utd up albeit by accident in my view. Bruce Arena fits the bill more, done nothing in the PL and has a good few faux-pas’s in his experience’ ‘locker’.

He might not do the shiny teeth bit - yet! But that can be sorted, he can come in via Besiktas and get his tombstones sorted at the same time (was going to call them his ‘Hampstead’s, but rhyming slang seems to be like me, aging badly!)

You know those two centre-halves that a few moan about on here that came from Monaco. Stamped by Mr Emenalo.

One of the biggest frauds in football, along with his slimy mate Average Grant.

Good - No, just well connected.

Edit: Not having a dig, but not much gets my heckles raised as much as those two and in particular Emenalo.

And that's kinda the issue in way, there's few of these standout names and most area already elsewhere. I imagine it would take some fairly sizeable convincing to prise any away from their current jobs or situations. Keeping in mind we were already turned down by Paul Mitchell previously IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong here through).

I suppose it's hard for us as outsiders to really gauge leadership and visionary qualities of those in such positions. Heck, for all we know those we've hired could hold these qualities and yet many are still left unsatisfied because it's not scratching the right itch.

I do see us putting more emphasis on targeting areas of need this upcoming summer, striker talk has already commenced by reports so that's kinda a good sign. We've also been linked with a desire to purchase a CB, which either means Thiago Silva is gone, and or we're not sold on the fitness/form/quality of others. Where I do have a sight different of opinion however is with us still buying young players. There's obviously two pipelines here when it comes to recruitment, those for the senior side and those that may need loans or to develop internally first. Depending on how development goes with these players that will determine if they're then sold as part of an asset based approach or integrated into the first team.

We're not going to stop buying young players to develop or flip, nor should we IMO. However, what I think needs to change is the priority of what we're in need of first. Right now there's senior positions that need addressing above anything else, until those are filled we shouldn't be trying to invest elsewhere unless there's a genuine starlet or something pops up. The focus needs to be on getting the first team right, then we can tinker with the rest.

It would be interesting to see. Generally a lot of the candidates for such roles come or have sports science backgrounds, obviously it's not a must, but it would be interesting to see just how much emphasis clubs put on that sort of background. From hearing Lampard on The Overlap podcast it does sound like he really wants to get back into and succeed in management.

I think you will find they came to the club from Laurence Stewarts lazy lets buy some of my ex-employers players list

Again it goes down TB & Eggs'y - If they had any nouce they would have the club had already had it fingers burn with Monaco players  "Bakayoko"

Definite frauds to the tune of 1/2bln in recruitment are the dynamic duo Winstannley and Stewart.

On Lampard, he’s always achieved as a player and I would think non-achievement hurts and might chew away at his professional pride.

Maybe why he keeps going back in, when the evidence says stay out. A Director role might be more suitable, he is a well-educated chap but a placement would have to be carefully structured so that a spikey coach Jose and a fair few other Portuguese coaches as examples couldn’t barb back at him reference his managerial appointments.

Where is the money coming from and where in your equation is all the loans coming back and going straight back on the wage bill

I suspected that we’d not agree on that one, but the two in-situ now are yet to prove top-tier operators - we probably do agree on that 😉👍

The other two, rode the back of Jose Mk1 then went behind his back to Roman. I’d recommend JT’s book, it doesn’t cover Grant in glory. Grant brought the other fella in to cover his back. Fortunately his averageness shone through.

No doubt it does to some degree. I imagine it would be tough for any top pro of that stature to then struggle in a management role post retirement from playing. Can't be easy.

If he doesn't cake it as a manager I could see him ending up in the media, more specifically a pundit. The spells he has had already have generally been pretty well received, and I think that's where he does shine currently. Maybe a Director type role, or something else behind the scenes can also suit, but also difficult to see him just given that sort of roll with no real prior experience.
