My Blood Is Blue

The Lewis Hall news has ruined this whole window for me because it confirms my worst fear.

Short-sighted. We will sell off the best academy players and pay lots of money to buy other teams players who aren’t any better. This is a model that will be detrimental long-term. This isn’t American franchise sports where the players affiliation to teams are rare. This is English football where fans wants to see the academy players rise through the ranks.

We will rue this day. Perhaps even go back to Newcastle and buy him for big money. We can also be sure that the prospects we have in the academy will see that the trend continues. Expect more top talents to want to leave us due to how the club is run.

Lavia and Caicedo are better MFs than Hall - and we have Chilwell and Maatsen (and Cucurella unfortunately) as LBs.

I semi agree with this , however the mitigation in this case is , unlike you me or everyone else here , he is a childhood Newcastle supporter , his entire family support Newcastle so like Mason "Home" Mount , he's probably following his own dreams rather than being driven out by the evil club who offered him a six year contract .

Of course every midfielder isn’t universal. But the difference between 4231 and 442 is very small. If you want to simplify it, just means one striker is slightly withdrawn to play between the lines. The midfield roles aren’t that much different, you still have one partner where the exact roles will depend on the partnership.

You make it sound like a midfielder who has grown up playing 433/4231/343 or various versions of it, can’t play in the pivot. Honestly, how many games have you even seen Hall in midfield to make that call? Plus, the lad is 18 ffs.

We’re not in the 70’s? No, but we are still talking about football.

We're not talking formations though, rather generalised player positions and then the specific role which then encompasses that position depending on the managers system and approach. As an example Makelele was a midfielder in a general sense, with his specific role being that of a Holding Midfielder that was determined by his qualities, you certainly wouldn't pick him to play the role Lampard had as an #8.

That's the larger point here with Hall. He's a midfielder in a general sense, which we both agree upon, but the type of midfielder based on his skillset displayed so far via his senior and youth level appearances (as a whole) don't translate to someone suitable for the roles that are held in the type of double pivot we play IMO. I don't look at him and see an out and out DM that'll hold the midfield and shield a defence, nor as a tempo setter like Enzo, or as a bonafide creator. I see his best place in midfield within a three man setup, ideally as that LCM. Where he can progress the ball via the dribble and make direct driving runs, two of his biggest offensive strengths.

Either way it's all rather moot now given he's virtually been sold, so it's not a scenario we'll have to contend with moving forward.

Lavia signs on a seven-year deal!

Welcome, Romeo!

Good signing, but one I wouldn't be been hard pressed about not making either.

That being said, he'll give us both suitable cover for Enzo and also allow us the additional flexibility to free Enzo up further to play closer to goal should we choose that direction.

I think with the signings of Caidedo and Lavia we have the steel we desperately need in midfield - and the defence looks a lot more robust. Just get rid of you know who and we’ll be all set.

Still to go:

In: back-up GK, possibly another winger

Out: Ziyech, Lukaku, CHO, Sarr, Anjorin, Cumming, Ugochukwu/Santos (loan)

Losing Hall is a disaster and one we will regret, but hopefully it means that Chalobah and Gallagher stay for now. I guess Mason Burstow and Basir Humphreys are being kept around the squad pending the recoveries of Badiashile and Broja.

Humphreys is at Swansea on loan I believe

Swansea and Stoke are both very interested in taking him on loan, but he's currently still at Cobham training with the first team squad.

It was strongly rumoured, like Hall to Palace, but didn't go through yet - some more late decisions being made.

Ahh ok thanks chaps , thought that one had already been done

While it may be a good idea to keep the squad trimmed with us having no European football, we really need another striker; imagine trying to name a lineup without Jackson in the team, I'm not sure even Poch would know who he'd play up top.

Pigeon Boy Sterling probably. Which is a terrifyingly benign prospect for any PL defence to deal with 😂

Can't wait for Bob's updated-list 🙂

As always this is just a bit of fun. Info as correct as I can manage up to and including midday 18th August 2023

Anything in red is either a new rumour or a change in circumstances (such as new contract signed) since the last update (1st July). In most cases I've only noted the first rumour seen, but where a story changes (for example one claims a swap deal where no swap was in the original story) this has also been included. Blue represents players signed by Chelsea. Players greyed out and italicised have either signed contract extensions or signed for a new club.

To avoid confusion, only transfers confirmed by either or both clubs are considered as official. Until then, they remain 'rumours'

Yes, the real question one should ask is “where does Hall rank in ability and potential at 18 compared to other academy players say over the last 20 years?” I’d say comfortably top 5.

You don’t sell that type of talent for £28m and then pretend it’s a smart move “because it’s pure FFP profits”. It’s bad business, end of discussion.

We will rue this day. Perhaps even go back to Newcastle and buy him for big money. We can also be sure that the prospects we have in the academy will see that the trend continues. Expect more top talents to want to leave us due to how the club is run.

I'm disappointed but it is a big stretch to be calling this a "model" at this point, and a very bold call to be saying the players we have brought in aren't any better. Do you genuinely not think, as far as direct comparisons can be made, that the likes of Fernández and Caicedo are not better than Lewis Hall?

Let's not forget we've cleared the decks this summer, 18 outgoings in total and up to 19 with Hall. That would make only three players who are academy products, and two of them going after lengthy periods with the senior team. The overwhelming majority being sold off are not academy products.

We are going to be selling academy products, so you will be "proven" correct in that sense. But every football club does, and we will he selling players we have bought, too. City have made huge money from doing just that this summer. "Top talent" will continue to come here for the reason it always has. Because we provide a second-to-none football education.
