Veiga looks like a player that (hopefully ) wont be intimidated

Agreed, but Veiga’s a midfielder being used as an inverted left back & he looks pretty raw. Not writing him off at all, just saying it’s debatable whether he’ll be ready for this level or not.

Maybe we need to look at it more from the perspective of he's a defensive midfielder that's capable of playing a little bit at both fullback and central defence - should it be required. This may allow us to loan out Ugo for some much needed football, still gives us some DM cover, while also gives us an additional option at fullback should Chilwell miss more games again. Therefore saving us from shuttling Colwill from a central role to a fullback one. 

In essence a defensively minded utility player.

We'll have to wait and see of course, but I can certainly see a similar line of thinking being had.

I think it’s mostly mental fatigue with this type of signing. We simply don’t know what Veiga is, but I can sympathise with fans being cynical to another signing like this. We have just made far too many of them in the least 18 months, which makes it very difficult to relate to players of this current stature, as there is no fan/player/club connection there right now, they are just commodities.

4-5 signings so far this summer. All understandable in their own right, yet not one of them clearly and obviously  improves the team from last season.  Of course that may change, but it’s difficult to for anyone to be confident of that right now.

Maybe so, yet ironically this has been something many wanted to see more of in our transfer deals over the years. How many times did we hear people shit on our scouting for not uncovering a Caicedo before he went to Brighton as an example. Then when we do spend big on established players they're still slated anyway. We're not looking to pick these players up earlier, while also signing others that have promise. Whether they of course go on to play senior football for us only time will tell, but I presume the best will rise to the top, while the rest will be sold as we continuously invest in the next wave for the future. 

I get having a high turnover of players makes it hard to establish a connection to them, but we're likely to see the number of bodies arriving decrease now that we've got a base group mostly in place.

Injury has done for him, sadly. There is a reason they are looking to sell a player, who before the injury was untouchable. That said, he still got 9 league goals last season.........could be worth a punt?

Sorry, I am editing my initial reply. How many is plenty. I think with some of these younger signings, it's a gamble. Buy 3 or 4 on the cheap and if 1 makes it, you are "up"....... then you try and shift the others for as much as you can get.

He was also really immobile last time I saw him play for us.  So stocky and bulked up he could barely run or accelerate - which at his age I found really, really worrying to be honest.  Thiago's 39 and looked to be moving a lot more fluidly than a 20 year old full-back / winger

I'm not going to put a specific number to a figure of speech, but I think it's uncontroversial to say plenty if you look at our recruitment overall. But I take what I think is your point, and perhaps it would be fairer not to say that they're specifically bought without an intention for them to play, and more that an intention for them to play isn't the bottom line objective for them.

I'm not convinced the figures work out so that you only need one in every four or so to work out for it to be a success, but none of us have access the figures so not a hill to die on.

My point more was that players like Renato Veiga, who we haven't yet signed, aren't blocking academy players.

Some things to ponder on in the spirit of (uncharacteristic) positivity while I wait for my beard dye to work.

1 - Imagine if Chilwell and James are fit for the majority of the season? 

2 - Imagine if Lavia comes in, fully fit, rested, raring to go and establishes himself as the anchor in midfield to release Caicedo to do  what he does best?

3 - Imagine if Jackson carries on the excellent form of the end of last season and establishes himself as the top dog (or should I say, Top Drog?) up top, scores 20 goals for us this season and cuts out the silly bookings? 

4 - Imagine if Wes Fofana comes back fully fit, fully fixed, and without having lost any pace or movement?

5 - Imagine if we signed a genuinely top, properly world class goalkeeper, someone like Marmadashvilli, sold Sanchez and had Petrovic as a back up? 

6 - Imagine if Maresca moves to a three at the back system with James, Fofana and Colwill the centrebacks, with Gusto and Chillwell/Cucurella the wing backs? 

7 - Imagine if Chukwuemeka stays fit and carries on improving as he has done?

8 - Imagine if Mudryk continues to be very hit and miss and so Kellyman comes in on the left side and takes his chance with both hands, starts scoring goals and influencing games and nails the spot down, freeing up Mudryk to become a very quick option off the bench?

9 - Imagine if Gallagher goes but Santos and Casadei replace him and do really well, keep possession better, score more goals etc so we aren't as badly affected as we are all worried we might be? 

10 - Imagine if we got £20m+ for Sterling from Saudi? 

11 - Imagine if we were less reliant on Cole Palmer to make things happen, under Maresca?

12 - Imagine if Cole Palmer continues to improve at the rate he has done, easily overtakes Phil Foden and imagine where having a player of that eventual stature and magnitude puts us? 

13 - Imagine if this new Doctor from Bournemouth cuts our injury problems by half? 

14 - Imagine if Strasbourg become (outside) contenders for the French league because we loan them Ugochukwu, Angelo, Washington, Moreira etc?

15 - Imagine if Guiu becomes a Tore Andre Flo type player off the bench?

16 - Imagine if Colwill stays fit and becomes the new club captain? 

17 - Imagine if Webster, Matos, Richards and Gilchrist all smash it on loan like Colwill did? 

18 - Imagine if Madueke has a good season on the right hand side and we get £90m+ for him next summer when we replace him with Willian and Kendry Paez? 

19 - Imagine if Maresca plays Enzo Fernandez further up the pitch and we start to see him really controlling the play like he is supposed to do? 

20 - Imagine if when Maresca says "I want to see aggression from the team" he means it and we go back to being hard as nails, sh*thouse merchants who love a scrap, instead of being too nice and being intimidated by everyone who comes to the Bridge? 

21 - Imagine if Maresca actually does okay because we tighten things up at the back and score more goals, and, having reduced expectation levels, gets enough out of the team and earns the backing of the fans? 

22 - Imagine if City fall off a bit as the hunger to win naturally reduces a little, Liverpool do next to nothing under their new boss, Arsenal become the new team to beat and then bottle it, Villa fail to replicate their highs of last season, ETH continues to fail to get a tune out of the worst United side I've seen since the 80s  and Spurs and Newcastle struggle? What then? 

23 - Imagine if all the promoted sides don't turn into Prime Barcelona against us home and away for no reason whatsoever and we pick up the full eighteen points  from them?

24 - Imagine if the media start to really dig us out and criticise us for the possession based, patient, aggressive, hard-working, very technical football we play under Maresca and everyone starts to hate us again because they see real progress being made? 

25 - Imagine if the nightmare we have endured is coming to an end and the good times are just around the corner?
