Raheem Sterling

Not realistic to expect a senior, experienced player joining to have any kind of galvanising impact? A strange take, imo. Not all leaders are blood-and-thunder types.

Agree

As many are suggesting  the club has no backbone or leadership then, the coaches, TB sports department should have identified this issue and spent the past two windows more wisely.

How many of the last two windows players recruited are leaders?

His biggest issue is the belief , like Lukaku that he is better than he actually is.

Agreed. I was dead against both signings, and both have been a disaster.  Not just their wages and contracts, but they were players with zero sell-on value who were both on the decline.

Never been a big fan but never doubted his output, he has been one of the leagues best attacking players for years.

I think we will see him back to his best next year and he will be a huge asset. Fully expect 15-20 goal contributions from him next season.

Its very easy to start singling out individual players for criticism this year but the truth is every single one has been pretty pony with the odd exception.  Reece James is the perfect example and it all boils down to one thing, or one man.

I said it the other day, just look at the difference in Felix after a few months of Potter.

For the first time since he joined, Sterling is starting to look back to his electric best. I've always been a big fan and it seems as though he's been given stick all throughout his career. Certainly after leaving Liverpool he wasn't universally liked especially when playing for England. Through his time at City he eventually earned respect both domestically and internationally and was viewed as an astute signing for us last summer by many.

Then the car crash. Last year was an absolute shocker for everyone in the team. Raheem did start well under Tuchel but after Potter took over, he found himself playing several positions including wing back.

I am of the belief that Sterling was a lot better than given credit for, especially when Reece James was also fit. The Sterling / James right side partnership was really taking shape however unfortunately Reece picked up his injuries and Sterling was moved around elsewhere on the pitch.

A couple of examples I shared in the Liverpool match thread when James and Sterling were also linking up brilliantly:

Vs Spurs from 1 min 45 secs.

 Vs Milan

Reece keeps making these overlapping runs because he knows the ball is coming, this also works both ways. Now inevitably Reece is injured again however there were promising signs of link up with Gusto providing 2 assists to Sterling Vs Luton.

Besides this, he looks a lot fitter and has got his lightning pace back. Interesting recent comments from Sterling about problems with his diet last year. https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/chelsea-fc-latest-news-sterling-pochettino-2023-b1096051.html

It's also important to note just how unfit as a team we were last season. Poch has already done great things here and everyone looks significantly sharper.

For anyone still with doubts I would cast your mind back to Pedro's first season here. He joined at a similar age to Sterling and looked absolutely woeful in the team that came 10th. Pedro then came good the next season being a critical player in the title winning season and was a great player for us over a number of seasons.

One thing our team really lacks right now is experience and goals, Sterling specialises in both. I would expect him to finish as top scorer.

Much as I think his form deserved an England return, I can't be the only one glad that Raheem is getting a week or two to rest rather than waste time getting a few minutes here and there in a couple of fairly meaningless games?

100%

Hope he retires from Intl. football.

What have they done?

There's footage of Spurs fans throwing objects at our players after one of the goals. It apparently (haven't seen it, think it has been taken down now) shows Sterling throwing something back at them. No one complained, wasn't in the ref's match report, FA had no knowledge of it. We then posted it on TikTok. Now it's being investigated. It will be a ban.

I read somewhere that the footage actually shows him throwing gently underarm and not in a way that was likely to injure.  My guess is that it was in the direction of some Spuds but not at them.

Seems most likely to me, still be amazed if the FA don’t choose to ban him. We could help ourselves by just not posting the footage, though!

So after a positive start to the season, he seems to have absolutely fallen off a cliff.

Assuming we will try to get rid in the summer, but no way we'll be getting any significant fee for him given his wages.

Since he was dropped by Southgate he's been on a mission for Raheem FC and is the worse for it.

Like Enzo  ignoring his defensive duties because he "wants" to play further forward.

The sort of behaviour , I don't know , how do you say it ? A coach would iron out.

I wasn't a fan of him before we signed him, I haven't been a big fan of him for most of his time here, but now he just seems to have lost interest. I've never seen a player that is supposed to be as good as he is, that runs into traffic so consistently. It's like he tries to find the hardest way to do everything all the time. I'm also pretty sure he doesn't want anyone else to get the glory, he constantly releases a pass about 3 seconds too late!

I won't be sad when he leaves.

The story of Raz, such a talented football, it's just all about his attitude... 75% time walking - highest figure of any forwards in the Prem.

In fairness Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink spent 99.99% of his time walking and he did OK , Raheem would look like Gallagher compared to Lukaku too !

I get people equate his 'value' to the size of his wages, but what did we all expect when he arrived from Man City. He wasn't a leader there or Liverpool, he scores goals and has always operated best in the last third of the pitch. He got on the end of the crosses/pull-backs that City specialised in and worked off Suarez at Liverpool. And always scored goals such as the one versus Forest at the weekend.

He can be effective and he can be frustrating, but that's what he's been all his career and it probably wasn't changing here. Use him to his strengths and have a system where he can play that part in and he's fine. Ask him to work in our last third, you're asking him to do something he's just not very good at. He's still very quick over that first 0-10 yards and use that wisely, he's an asset. Would I pay him the reported £300+k per week to do that - No chance, but that's not his fault.

Apparently the quote was from a Daily Mail interview earlier in the week and published by the DM when he didn't appear on the team sheet.

Personally I feel Sterling isn't going to get any sympathy from the supporters as this is precisely the sort of egotistical, self entitled attitude that has not endeared him to us in all the time he's been at Stamford Bridge. This and his penalty against Leicester (?) just goes to show he's not interested in the Club he's only interested in Raheem. I've got no sympathy, the guy is hardly in poverty and only came to us so that he could bum Sunday lunch off his mum and go out with his pals in London. He's in the same group as Lukaku and Kepa, overpaid and offer nothing to the Club.

Get lost Raheem and take your stupid tatoos with you.

PS Was he even at the ground showing solidarity with his team mates?
